Many Japanese, especially women wear kimono at their wedding, Coming of Age, New Year, University graduation ceremony and many similar special occasions. There are no hard rules that enforces you to wear a kimono but you should ask the organizer or venue receptionist to see what is recommended for traditional and formal events.
More importantly, although it is true that wearing a kimono in daily life hasn’t been practical and it’s mostly worn on special occasions… there is a growing population of young Japanese and foreigners enjoying the cultural beauty/sustainable factors/cultural history embedded in Kimono. You should never limit the use on events only, but try it on regularly by changing the band and accessories! :)
