The growing number of foreign tourists are causing a lot of problem for geiko/geisha in Kyoto (as some behave ruthlessly to get a clear shot on their camera).
First of all, it’s important to distinguish between a real and fake geisha since there are now services where you can dress up like them. Anyone that is taking a leisurely walk or taking a rest in the park are tourists dressed in geisha-like kimono and makeup; while those who appear to be busy going in and out of taxis are real geishas.
Geisha, although interesting to see, are not there for tourist attraction. They are on a very tight work schedule and needing to make their way towards their client(s). They may willingly stop and pose for people to take pictures or videos but this is only a gesture of kindness - if they are not stopping, you should not block their way in respect of their profession.
It is not wrong to kindly ask for a picture, but you must read the line between acceptable requests and being intrusive. Look around and understand their circumstance - being part of a large crowd and acting like a paparazzi is absolutely rude and unacceptable. If you ever encounter a geisha in this situation, please refrain from being part of the problem and enjoy the rare moment without taking out your camera.

Would taking a picture of (or with) geisha considered rude? There are many tourists making a crowd around geishas.
