Those are called “Maneki Neko” (meaning ‘beckoning cat’) and it’s one of Japan’s recognizable symbols. These lucky cats are mostly made in ceramic but there are some that’s made from wood or plastic, jade or gold. Recently, there are slow-waving mechanical paws welcoming guests to their stores.
Take a close look at the “Maneki Neko” and you’ll see there are various types. Some of them wear neck decorations with bells (allowing to track the cat’s whereabouts -like pets). Some, holding different items, such as:
(1) Coins
An Edo period money called the “koban” - wishing good luck for money.
(2) Money Bag
Along with wealth, this symbolizes luck as well.
(3) Carp (Koi Fish)
The koi fish is thought to be a symbol of fortune and abundance.
(4) Marble/Gemstone
This is less common but if the cat is holding one of these in its paw, this symbolizes wisdom as well as wealth.
(5) Hollowed Gourds “hyotan”
These are containers for sake - often used by the Seven Lucky Gods representing wisdom and longevity. It’s also believed to ward off evil and bring good luck.
———
Take a look at the Maneki Neko’s gestures; especially the paw. You’ll see that these lucky cats are raising the left paw, right paw or both.
[Right paw raised]
Brings wealth and good luck
[Left paw raised]
Attracts people (to their business)
[Both paw raised]
Provides protection.
