Japanese drinking etiquette can be complicated and troublesome for foreigners (especially if you are in a business or formal situation).
First rule is to never serve your own drink and allow others to pour them for you.
Secondly, if you are having sake, hold your cup with both hands politely -you may often have to do this with other drinks as well to show respect. Similarly, when you are serving the drink for others, you must hold the sake bottle with both hand (unless you are in a higher social status).
Finally, before you drink you would say “Kanpai (cheers)” and touch the glass with the other person, but another rule is to make sure your glass is positioned lower to show respect (unless you are in a higher social status).
