In Japan, the bath and water must be kept absolutely clean, therefore, it’s extremely important that you clean your body before entering a bathtub. Also, it’s essential that you never let the towel touch the bathtub water.
It might be embarrassing to be fully naked - quite intimidating for first timers but it will be a unique cultural experience nonetheless. With more foreigners coming to Japan, there tends to be a general guideline somewhere so, be observant, polite, courteous and you’ll be all set!
Please note that most communal baths do no accept people with tattoo as it associates with the Japanese mafia=Yakuza... Also, be considerate about your health before entering [ex. avoid alcohol and dehydration].
